The Match

According to the NRMP data for 2012, there were a total of 363 dermatology residency positions (23 at the PGY-1 level and 340 at the PGY-2 level) which 672 applicants ranked during the match. The overall match rate into dermatology was 54% for all applicants and 67% for graduates of U.S. medical school.

In 2011, 79% of U.S. medical school graduates who indicated that dermatology was their preferred specialty successfully matched. Among successful applicants, the average Step I score was 244, and the average number of abstracts, presentations, and publications was 7.5, and the average number of volunteer experiences was 7.5.

Based on a survey of 53 program directors, the 5 most important parts of a successful dermatology residency application were (1) the Dean's Letter, (2) letters of recommendation, (3) personal statement, (4) Step I score, and (5) class ranking.
